With continuous AF the results are more varied though; a significant amount of the shots on 5D mk III were quite off and while 5D mk IV seems to do somewhat better, it's still not exactly a reliable combination. The 7D Mark 2 has a shutter lag rating of 55 milliseconds, which is identical to the shutter lag on the 1D Mark 4. However, you can adjust the shutter lag on the 1D Mark 4 (C.Fn IV-14) to make it as short as 40 milliseconds (best achieved with lenses shot wide-open or near to it, and with lenses with large maximum apertures).
You could probably get away with shooting ISO 200 or 400 and brightening later on, potentially saving 4-5 EV of highlight headroom. In terms of the price difference, the 1D IV does look like the better option. I have had some success with effective focal lengths of around 450 mm and with the 400 mm f5.6 I would get approximately 520 without a TC.
